For over 20 years, Bungala Aboriginal Corporation has been committed to improving the social, cultural, and economic well-being of Indigenous people in Port Augusta and surrounding regions. Their mission is to provide employment and training opportunities that empower Aboriginal individuals to achieve financial independence and lead fulfilling lives.
“We work to break down the barriers to employment faced by many in our community,” says Nathan Freeman, Manager of Programs and Delivery.
Through a culturally informed approach, Bungala provides pathways to long-term employment for Aboriginal people across the region.
One of Bungala’s standout initiatives is their Food Service Program, which specifically focuses on recruiting long-term unemployed Aboriginal women, many of whom have never been in the workforce. This program not only provides employment but also delivers freshly cooked, nutritious meals to vulnerable Aboriginal people throughout the region.
What started as a small canteen with just two staff has now grown into an operation with 18 employees, delivering over 600 meals per week to 450 clients across Port Augusta, Whyalla, Quorn, and even remote towns like Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta.
After receiving a SilverChef Community Grant valued at $5,000 AUD, Bungala was able to purchase a commercial food processor to enhance the efficiency of their growing program.
“This wonderful grant has allowed us to upgrade our equipment, drastically improving both our training and our ability to deliver meals to those across our community,” says Freeman.
Thanks to this grant, Bungala continues to provide life-changing training and employment opportunities that empower trainees to build new skills, gain confidence, and contribute to their community. This support enables Bungala to keep up with the increasing demand for their services, further uplifting the local Indigenous population with essential services and pathways to employment that create lasting positive impacts.
