Ngutu College is an independent, not-for-profit school located on Kaurna Country in Woodville North, South Australia. The college provides an inclusive, culturally informed educational environment, integrating Aboriginal knowledges with the Australian Curriculum.

With a commitment to achieving 50% Aboriginal enrolment, the College serves a diverse community, supporting children and families, many of whom face significant social and economic challenges.

“Our focus is on providing a safe, supportive space where young people can learn and succeed, with Aboriginal cultures at the heart of everything we do,” says Andrew Plastow, Head of College at Ngutu.

Ngutu College currently supports over 260 children and young people, 47% of whom are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. “We provide accessible education to children and families who often face multiple barriers to participation. It’s about empowering them to achieve both academic and personal success,” explains Andrew Plastow.

After receiving a SilverChef Community Grant valued at $5,000 AUD, Ngutu College purchased essential kitchen equipment, including an upright freezer, rice cooker, and pie warmer, for Ngani, the Ngutu Café and Shopfront.

“This equipment is important to our café project, which provides training and employment pathways for our young people, many of whom wouldn’t normally have this opportunity,” says Andrew.

The café offers skills in areas like cooking, sales, and barista work, helping participants gain confidence and practical experience. “This project will give our community members real-life experience in a safe and supportive environment, preparing them for future employment,” adds Andrew.

With this grant, Ngutu College continues to create opportunities for its young people and families, empowering them to break the cycle of disadvantage through education and training.
